Advanced Seminar Summer Term 2025

Digital Sovereignty Revisited

Digital sovereignty is discussed on multiple societal levels in Germany and Europe, however, without being clearly defined in (technical) terms. The World Economic Forum defines the term as “Digital sovereignty, cyber sovereignty, technological sovereignty and data sovereignty refer to the ability to have control over your own digital destiny – the data, hardware and software that you rely on and create.”

The goal of the advanced seminar is to revisited the subject of digital sovereignty when it comes to telecommunication networks.

Telecommunication networks rely on a wide-range of hardware- and software components.

Goals

The goals of the seminar are:

  • Open discussion about what digital Sovereignty could mean in the field of computer science, in terms of societal, political, economic, technical, and scientific terms.
  • Determine a scientifc topic for yourself out of the discussion you can write a scientific text about, discuss it with your peers, and present it
  • Present relevant literature for the general topic and for your specific topic
  • Write the text
  • Present the text
  • Potentially: create a poster for a poster exhibition within the computer science faculty
  • Potentially: cooperate within the FUDANET team with the Prof. Dr. Rieger and computer science students of Hochschule Fulda

Further Notes

Attending the seminar will require to attend the seminar sessions in 80 % of the cases.

Please note that the studies here in the seminar can be be seen as complementing the discussions and findings in the Advanced Communication Networks (ACN) module. ACN will also be taught this summer term and discusses, amongst other topics, how to build a network element from scratch on your own.

An example for a topic could be on how replace existing hardware switches with software only switches based on FreeBSD or Linux.
